Welly Ball

In 2017 and 2016, I was Head of Creative and served on the marketing team for Welly Ball: an annual ‘black-tie with a twist’ charitable event with all proceeds donated to the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust. I created visual assets in support of the event—including directing, producing, and shooting a yearly cornerstone promotional photoshoot—and designed/built marketing materials, such as sponsorship decks and social content, using these assets.

As an inherently visually distinctive occasion—a fresh and lighthearted highlight on the St Andrews social calendar amid the chill of impending winter, and a break from the uncomfortable footwear of other formal events—I felt strongly about communicating light, zest, and energy in these images.

I wanted this shoot to tell a story: of friends having an easygoing good time in the fresh air, spanning day into evening.

A key signifier of the Welly brand’s rustic and active aesthetic identity—along with nods to heritage brands including Land Rover, Hunter, and Barbour—is the time-honoured British tradition of the rambling country walk. And so what better place to shoot than on the Fife Coastal Path itself?

For WB’s 10th anniversary, we threw it a birthday party. Well, not really, but that was the idea behind the year’s promotional photoshoot: evoking the aesthetic of a spirited dinner party and aftermath in all its sepia-tinged glamour and mess (right down to cheesy chips at the end of a long night of revelry).

Shooting in private homes on location in St Andrews, and with personally sourced props contributed by team members, this photoshoot was a true group effort (much like any good party is).

I was inspired by old event photos from the archives of Tatler’s Bystander column: vintage analogue snaps of raucous, candid festivity.
